Should Women Register for the Draft?

Senate panel re-ignites debate on draft for women

Congress is on the verge of ordering young women to register for a military draft for the first time in history, touching off outrage among social conservatives who fear the move is another step toward blurring gender lines.

The female draft requirement, approved Thursday by the Senate Armed Services Committee, could be as heated as the divisive debate over what public lavatories and locker rooms transgender people should use.

Opponents of expanding the draft may be unable to halt the momentum in favor of lifting the exclusion, triggered by the Pentagon’s decision last year to open all front-line combat jobs to women.

After gender restrictions to military service were erased, the top uniformed officers in each of the military branches expressed support during congressional testimony for including women in a potential draft.

The Senate Armed Services Committee added a provision to its version of the annual defense policy bill that calls for women to sign up with the Selective Service within 30 days of turning 18 — just as men must — beginning in January 2018, according to a summary of the legislation released by the committee.

This question is highly controversial.  I suppose I’m old-fashioned in my opinion that I believe women should not be required to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces.  There is a growing trend among young women to enlist and serve in a capacity that heretofore was reserved for men only.  That’s a choice that was offered and has been accepted by so many women.

[Note:]  Women were nearly drafted during World War II because of a shortage of military nurses.

Military leaders maintain the all-volunteer force is working and do not want a return to conscription.

Pro-Birth Is Not Pro-Life

I was amazed when I read the headline, “Catholic Nun Explains Pro-Life In A Way That Will Stun Many.”  My curiosity encouraged me to read the article.  I thought, “What new slant/opinion/explanation would a Catholic nun give to this very heated, controversial topic that has been keeping right-wingers, pro-lifers, pro-family and “family values” folks, hot under their collars and vitriolic noises spouting from their mouths?”

SisterImage above and quote below are from an article by Leslie Salzillo, originally posted in the Daily Kos, and appearing in the Liberals Unite news magazine, dated July 31, 2015.

In one simple quote, Sister Joan Chittister, O.S.B. sums up the hypocrisy in the ‘pro-life’ movement:

“I do not believe that just because you’re opposed to abortion, that that makes you pro-life. In fact, I think in many cases, your morality is deeply lacking if all you want is a child born but not a child fed, not a child educated, not a child housed. And why would I think that you don’t? Because you don’t want any tax money to go there. That’s not pro-life. That’s pro-birth. We need a much broader conversation on what the morality of pro-life is.”

I would add to the above quote:  “not a child loved.”  When an unwanted child is born, in many cases, the parent becomes an abuser, and the child suffers emotional and, perhaps also, physical abuse.

Any individual who would take the time and use average intellect, should understand the difference.

I’ve had many conversations with individuals regarding, if laws were passed in our country restricting abortions under ANY circumstance, who would support all the unwanted children that would be born?  The extreme, religious conservatives in Congress and in some states, want to restrict contraception information and other health care by clinics to couples or women or men who can’t afford private physicians, by limiting or stopping federal funding.  State funding through Medicaid is restricted in some states, because of those states’ refusal to expand necessary funding.  It makes no sense to someone who looks at the world through clear, unclouded glasses.

What also makes no sense is the fact that women, who can’t obtain abortions safely and legally, will obtain them “in the back alley.”  They put their lives in jeopardy.  Let’s be realistic here.  If a woman is desperate for an abortion, she will try any means to accomplish her goal.  And, she may not want to “wait 24 hours to think it over.”

The ultra-conservatives in our Congress want the general public to believe that Planned Parenthood is aborting left and right – like it’s an epidemic.  And that fetal body parts are being sold as an additional “side business” to support expenses of abortions.  Not true.

From HLN:

  • Anti-abortion group released video of what they contend is proof that Planned Parenthood sells organs and tissues
  • Planned Parenthood insists it does not make a profit from fetal tissue
  • The advocacy group says the money discussed on the video had to do with the cost to transport donated tissue
  • Selling fetal body parts is against federal law

The following quote is from Vox:

Planned Parenthood uses federal funds to cover reproductive health services — but not abortions

Both Title X and Medicaid provide low- to middle-income women with financial assistance to cover family planning costs. Medicaid might, for example, reimburse Planned Parenthood when it provides a patient with an HPV vaccine. And a Planned Parenthood clinic could use Title X grants to subsidize the placement of an IUD, which can cost upward of $500 for an uninsured patient.

The exact family planning benefits that Medicaid covers varies from state to state. But generally, many states will cover contraceptives, STD screenings, HPV vaccines, and cancer screenings as well as sterilization and reversal procedures — and will reimburse Planned Parenthood when it is the provider.

BTW, Planned Parenthood clinics offer services for men.  I believe most people don’t know about those health services offered at the PP clinics.

One Man’s War On Women, Among Other Things

Wisconsin’s Republican Governor Scott Walker has proposed his state’s new budget.

A good-looking man; however, "don't judge a book by its cover."

A good-looking man; however, “don’t judge a book by its cover.”

“Walker’s agenda takes direct aim at how the citizens of Wisconsin can participate in key programs and levels of participation, whether it’s property rights with environmental controls, parental participation with school boards, making passing referendums nearly impossible, making it harder to vote, defunding seniors’ support programs, rejecting infrastructure improvement programs, making taxpayers pay millions for not expanding Medicaid expansion as well as attacking women’s legal reproductive health rights.” (Bold is added.)

~Scott Walker Watch

“Tucked away in Republican Governor Scott Walker’s proposed budget, is a clause that has nothing to do with campus funding. Yes, the proposed budget cuts 30 million dollars from the public university system. But beyond the Governor’s war on education, he is also intensifying the war on women, by proposing the elimination of rape reporting requirements on campus.”  (Bold is added.)

~PoliticusUSA

A clause in his proposed budget deletes language relating to sexual assault information and reporting so that no report is required:  to the State Legislature; to newly entering students; to the Department of Justice regarding statistics of assault and rape at the university; and “would also end the requirement that university employees who witness a sexual assault on campus, must report it to the Dean of Students.”  Just “sweep it under the rug,” guys.

This man’s actions have the approval of the Tea Party ultra conservatives of the Republican party and the Koch Brothers.  He is single-handedly bringing the state of Wisconsin to its knees.  I wonder if the state’s average, tax-paying citizens are aware of this man’s gross negligence, discriminatory actions and incompetence, IMHO.  His website, which asks for contributions to his campaign, states in the header:  “Scott Walker – Moving Wisconsin Forward.”
