Great Blue Heron Ambulation

I was fortunate to catch this gangling Great Blue outside my bedroom window one morning.  They are named appropriately, for sure.

  1. Reminds me of a humorous incident. We have a small pond that was so weedy we could hardly see the fish. So we bought a couple of grass carp and they cleaned it up. The problem was, once the pond was clear and you could see the fish, a heron arrived and took one each day for two days in a row. No more grass carp. And the weeds have now grown back.

    • Joseph, that gave me a chuckle! Birds will be birds!!! 🙂 Some time ago, I posted about a bird (can’t remember if it was the heron or the egret) who decided to eat a fish from the lake here. My husband and I happened to be in the patio, looking out at the lake one day, and got all excited about the size of the fish the bird was trying to get down his gullet. It took several minutes, and several bouncing of the fish and picking it up again and trying his darnedest to get that fish down. It was an enormous fish, and we couldn’t see how he could swallow it because of his narrow neck (I think it was the egret). He finally got it just right with the fish’s head in the down position. It was funny watching that fish expand the bird’s neck as it went down into the bird’s stomach. As soon as I saw what was happening, I ran into the house to get my camera, and got good photos of the whole process.

    • Joseph, it was the Great Blue Heron. Here is the link to my post. You have to scroll down somewhat, because this post is about different birds. You’ll see the photo showing the heron holding the fish in his beak while trying to swallow it. https://sunshinebrightblog.wordpress.com/2014/10/06/aves-is-latin-for-birds/?preview_id=2554&preview_nonce=65942de564&post_format=standard&_thumbnail_id=-1&preview=true
